In my opinion it would have looked a lot better to mark off the center of where the pipe passed through then drilled a hole between the 2 pieces.

Or, one piece with a hole in it. The tool required is called a "hole saw". Who knew...

I think he should have kept slapping the two boards against the pipe as he started - eventually he would have indented the wood and smashed the pipe and it ouwl have been a perfect fit - just saying...

That actually draws more attention to something you'd rather not be noticed. Seems to be another case of, "To a hammer everything looks like a nail."

Why not just make a hole slightly larger than the pipe, cut the trim through the center of the hole vertically then slide the two pieces together against the wall around the pipe. The two pieces should fit together with almost no seam since it was just one cut and no need to oversize the hole to accommodate the fitting. Perfect fit without all of the unnecessary cutting. If it was my house, I'd paint the pipe the trim color too.
Also, why is there a water line coming through the wall as low as the trim? It just seems like an odd place to bring a water line through.
