I have never seen such a thing!!!! I guess that is faster than turning it to size!!. I would think cutting fluid would be needed to do that. Has to considerable heat generated in the process.

Interesting that the chips are not blue or discolored.

That appears to be aluminum or some other non-ferris alloy, which does not change color as temperature rises like steel. I cannot be sure, as I have never see it before this video, but I doubt the process would work on steel.

Other than reducing diameter to a fixed radius of installed skives, I don't understand what skiving does that couldn't be done on a large lathe where any size can be turned? I know they use skiving machines to cut gears, but can't figure out this application.
