I wonder why the spacers, instead of just using ball or some other sort of bearings all the way around. Maybe, to make up for thermal expansion/contraction?

stops the balls wearing against each other - most bearings have a cage to seperate the balls/ bearing elements - in this case, the cage is segmented into bronze spacers.
