Nice. One of these days I'm gonna make a set. These days I use strips of wood. Very fiddly with only two hands. I never think of making them until I need them. I have too many irons in the fire...always.
Floradawg, I also have this habit of doing things only when they are absolutely necessary! Thank you for your interest and comment!
Machining 4 All,
Nice set of replaceable jaws.
I made a simple set of copper jaws for mine. Made from a piece of copper tube. Annealed, split and flattened out then folded to suit. Not as nice as yours but causes no damage.
I think we all have that problem! I know it is an issue both at home and at work.
If you don't have time to do a proper set of jaws though you can always glue up a slip over pair. Slip on or slip over jaws may not be perfect but they do save the grief of needing an extra set of arms and hands to do every thing required in a clamp up.
I made a set of bolt-on soft jaws to fit my small grinding vise some years back. Also have a set of soft jaws for same for a special recurring job. Real handy to have.
Those are nice! I bought a magnetized plastic set for my little 3" clamp-on ancient Craftsman bench vise, but they were 4" jaws. I haven't even modified them because they work well enough. I can slide them sideways to make use of the various cutouts in the jaws. I'm lucky enough to have a place nearby that sells several types and sizes, but I was often using wood, or pieces of sheet aluminum bent to more or less stay on the jaws while I tightened the vise. Half an hour in the shop could make several sets of soft jaws for most vises. I have a blacksmith's leg vise with 7" jaws that will one day be ready to use again, and it will have several types of magnetic jaws, too.
WmRMyers,
Bill,
I remember you were thinking about building a cutter grinder. Have you made a start on that yet?
