spade drill extension as a tap extension

if you have ever had to tap a thread in a hole that was difficult to get to you might appreciate this
I needed to tap some holes in a member that was 10 inches deep inside of a structure. Fortunately they were 1/4-20 so my spade drill extension worked perfectly. the square of the tap fit in the 1/4" bore and was secured in place by the grub screws the chuck end had 3 flats which allowed me to tighten this into my T handle

Desperation makes for ingenuity. I have a few of those. One of them is 5 feet long!

did you make the extension, modify a commercial one, or buy it? I have a couple I've picked up over the years, and plan to make a few around the 2-4 foot range

Last time I got lucky Home Despot was dumping a 5 foot Klein bit extender. Now after I bought it I found out that Klein makes the hex not quite 1/4" my guess is that it is 6mm so you have to use their bits. But I made a 1 inch spade bit fit. Leatherman to the rescue. For about 20 years I have been using Bosh and now Freud spade bits that have a screw on the tip. Nearly as good as a true ships auger for drilling and very easy to sharpen.
