Hi Gabe.
I'm kinda stumped here, sphere machine? Like out of what and how big? Like making ball handles on the lathe or larger? Maybe I'm over thinking your inquiry, but it's always good to have an idea of what the parameters are.
Sorry if I'm being dense.
Hello C-Bag
I would like to make one for wood and rock.
Stand alone unit.
Size about 8" and smaller sphere.
I know It has to be built like a beefy beast.

Thank you C-Bag
Well you got me there Gabe. Never seen a sphere machine before and it's not real clear how they work although I guess there's vids somewhere. I made what I call a radius cutter that could be made to cut a sphere I guess. But that was wood. Rock, wow, my first thought is what a mess! :) What are you making, fences and walls?
Guess we'll see who else shows up and what they have to offer
Here's a video of one in operation, C-bag...

Thanks Marv! There was another one on there with a guy with a home made machine and that was VERY interesting. Pipe couplings with the grinding surfaces made with brazing rod with 80 grit diamond in it.
WOW, who knew?
It's the complete antithesis of what we strive for with machine tools - a device purpose-made to induce random motion in the workpiece. Perfection from chaos; it's downright philosophical.
 indeed!
Just found this one made from old cordless drill motors:

Another beefier one: http://andy321.proboards.com/post/538726
Thank you guys.
Mklotz, C-Bag And Jon.
C-Bag I would like to turn rare hardwood, and small meteors.
If this can get off the ground and working true and safely, then another one for true Damascus steel rounds.
Very cool. Lot more to kick around.

You know I may have to build one of those someday just so I can sit around and watch it work
Thanks for kicking it around here Gabe. Learn something new everyday.
Sounds like you're going to need a min of 4 machines, a lapidary saw, grinder, and the sphere machine for the rock and something else for the wood. You are going to be busy for a while :) hope you show us what you come up with when you're done.....good luck.
Thanks again everyone for your input.

There is another variety, that work on a production basis. They're called ''skew rolling mills''. A tapered helical 'screw' is fed round bar stock at the smaller end. The helix and taper works a lot like rolling meat balls between your palms..
Most are used in 'ball mills' which pulverize various materials; for cement, paint, prescriptions, all kinds of stuff.
