You don't have to swing hard because all the energy was put into lifting the extra weight above your head.

It would be interesting to try though and it probably beats a maul and wedge any day.

The one I had lasted almost long enough to toss it Might be good for pine fir or maybe ash but forget it with mesquite or fruitless mulberry. the wedge angle is too wide the pawls grab too early in the split and no matter how hard you swing it if it doesn't just bounce off and sticks there is no good way to beat it with a sledge hammer because the pawls work against you.
I'll stick with my Collins Ax Maul at least I can hold it with one hand and swing a 12 lb sledge against it.

I have one. It seems to do well for really dry wood, but I agree with most of your complaints there Frank. Seems like when you do wood, you accumulate tools for every different situation.....just like any other kind of job. It has its application.

I had one and it worked well, I don't know what happened to it, I guess someone liked it more than me.
