A crochet hook works very good for small springs.

I am sure many of us have to reinstall the springs on brake drum back plates using screw drivers and pliers. One day I bought a cheap ass set of brake drum tools from HF and it changed my world for the better.

In the past I've used vise-grips on brake backing plate springs, that was before I obtained the proper tools.
