That is a nice spring making tool. And it can handle several different diameters! I need two or three of them for smaller and larger ones.
One thing I may do different would be to braze the nuts together instead of welding. It would be a lot neater that way.
I am wondering if a "three ball" crank could be made this way, with nuts and bolts.
What wire is used in the making of springs.
Just about any wire could in theory be used to make springs as long as it had a high enough tensile to retain its shape.
Brass even plastic has been used in delicate instruments where not a whole lot of load requirement is on the springs.
But in general, a high carbon high tensile steel or stainless is used. I've used piano wire of different sizes many times
