    Spring-Winding Arbor Size Calculator

    Hi all,

I've got quite a few random home-made tools on my website, and quite a few that I haven't got as far as writing about on the website (hopefully I'll get there soon). However, as a new forum member, I thought I'd post a new tool I've just added that others might find useful.

It's a calculator primarily intended for working out the right arbor size to use when winding a spring out of music wire on the lathe. The calculator is written entirely in javascript so runs in a web browser - nothing to install or download. If you really want to use it off-line, then Google Chrome (and probably other browsers) offer a save-as "Web Page, Complete" option and if you open the resulting file it'll work without an internet connection (as will all the other calculators on the site).

    Link to the calculator: http://www.cgtk.co.uk/metalwork/reference/spring.

Very nice piece of work. You may be interested in a spreadsheet I created which does similar calculations - I'll have to run some test data to see if we get similar results. My spreadsheet was based on this:

"Design and Wind Your Helical Springs by Kozo Hiraoko (Part 1 page 20 Home Shop Machinist 1987 May-Jun, part 2 page 30 Home Shop Machinist 1987 Jul-Aug) provided a method of estimating the required mandrel size for a spring based on experimental data. While the results of this method may not provide an exact solution, they do provide an acceptable approximation, or a starting point for exact results."

If you are not able to find a copy of Hiraoko's article, let me know and I may be able to help you out.

    Thank You Dr. AL
This is really a handy bit of information. Haven't made very many springs but I sure this will really improve things. Once again thank you.

Also could be useful for winding heating elements. I just did some trial and error testing.
