This bothers me a lot. Why do we allow industrial scale slaughter of sea animals and not e.g. deer, ducks, or bear?

That's the problem. It's called overfishing, because that's a friendlier name than "hunt everything until there's nothing edible left". There are worse things than this. Bottom trawling is the equivalent of bulldozing forests to scare the animals out.

If the so called first word people ate even half of the food, they buy, or would consider buying the less than absolute perfect looking produce in the supermarkets hunger on this planet would be eliminated Overfishing could be cut in half the same goes for domestic animal slaughter could be reduced. Then when you add in all of the processed foods that reaches the landfills still in unopened containers simply because of an imaginary sell by date.
When I was in the Army we had "C" rations that had manufactures dates dating back to the Korean war days and even before. Once we actually ate "K" rations made just after WWI. Now htey have MRE's known as "Meals Rejected by Everyone" if they have a 10-year-old date on them I've heard they are sent to be destroyed.
