Steel wool and a 9v battery works good too.

Steel wool helps, but I never have steel wool around!

I'll stick to steel wool rather than the gum wrapper. Survival kits are meant for emergencies and gum doesn't stay fresh for the year(s) the kit is safely in it's waterproof case.
