You have to wonder about the guys designing the original production process. One of the guys said, "Hey! We can just grab the glowing metal with tongs and thread it back into the machine before it goes completely sideways, can't we?" and another guy said "Sure! That should work!"

The cross country mill was developed around the turn of the last century (1905 if I remember correctly). Believe it or not, it was a safety improvement on the previous process where the guys had to catch the rods & feed them back over the mill. Process control at that time punched a clock.

Saw many of these back in the 70's when I was a machine operator in a small steelworks in Wales, fortunately I was well above the action in the control cabin.
