Steel mill explosion - GIF

Thow shalt not introduce water into the retort
-
Granite City works had a improperly cured ladle(moisture) filled from a torpedo car. The explosion was huge . No one died, but several were burned over any exposed flesh.( hands ,neck, face) Molten pig iron flowed into a sewer .Huge crater. I went in on repair. Hot for a week. Bosses all trying to make a name for themselves. Stupidity prevailed .

WOW, that had to be a scary situation
-
It was shortly after 2000. I can't remember the year for sure. Steel mills are dangerous places. I have many "There but for the grace of God moments" reflecting of my years working there.

Typical winter scene in a Canadian steel mill if you don't follow scrap protocols regarding moisture in the materials on the first charge.

Yep. After scrap loading into the vessel, a period of time is need to flash off moisture before the pig iron is dumped in.(depending on the source of the scrap) Those exposions as you say are pretty common. Pretty much contained in the vessel. It makes the pigeons fly and the quiche rain down like snow.
