    There's a reason why good strap wrenches have a rubber or rubber-coated belt; there has to be good friction between belt and 'nut' for this style wrench to work on smooth surfaces (like an oil filter). Notice that in the gif the nut has distinctive ribs to grip - probably a deliberate choice.
