It was found that many of those old growth trees had huge hollow areas in their stumps from lightening strikes or disease, they could be turned into houses or shelters quite easily the solid stumps could have had a hollow burned into them or hollowed out by tools making for a lot of work but in the end once a roof and doors or possibly windows as well they could be made into nice frontier cabin sized homes. Some still exist today after all these years.
