Back in the early ‘70 I was driving along a sealed road in the north of Penang, Malaysia. I came to a road like this completely covered in shrimp drying in the sun. There was no room to turn around, and while I was thinking what to do a bystander waved me on, just drive through them. There was about half a mile of road covered with shrimp, at the end of the shrimp there were a few houses and the road also ended. I then had to turn around and drive back over all the shrimp again. I felt like I was damaging their product, but perhaps they wanted them flattened. They didn’t seem upset about me doing it.

Making Belacan.
That's dried shrimp paste, ground up and compressed into blocks. Looks a bit like blocks of beef stock, smells awful, and is used in much the same way as beef stock. Adds flavour to soups and stews. Common throughout Malaysia and Indonesia, other nearby countries too.
