Table traverse is way to slow, if you must persist I suggest removing the feed screw and rig up a lever feed.

Agree longitudinal travel too slow and grinding sparks are towards operator, and so would any flying parts. Ideally wheel should spin in opposite direction.

Is the motor/wheel assembly mounted to the wall?
