    Cool Surface Grinding Attachment

As a knife maker, I love having flat pieces to work with. Makes my life way easier. In this video we will be replicating a common design that was first pioneered by Travis Wuertz. The Parts list and some drawings are in the description of the video.

    Way cool!

A thought on the adjusting knob:
    Use a differential screw.

You can take a 3/8-24 screw, thread it through a block, and have a 1/4-28 step-down on the end that threads into the plate holding your magnet.

    One full turn of the screw = (1/24) - (1/28) Inches, or .0416 - .0357 = .0059"

I have an old block plane with a differential screw on it and it's really nice for tweaking the cut a tiny tiny amount.

Of course, if you can cut your own screws, you can make the final amount be ultra-tiny.

Another way to get finer movement is to use a lever action to press on the magnet plate, using a spring to pre-load it back against the lever.

Your adjusting screw pushes on one end of the lever, which is pivoted (say) 5" away with a 1" extension past the fulcrum/pivot point. This gives a 5:1 reduction in movement. So, a 1/4-20 screw (.050" per turn) will make a .010" movement.

Of course, your total movement is then restricted, so you'll need to add a rough-adjust slide to this structure so you can get close the right measurement, then use the fine-adjust to do the final moves during grinding.

Just some ideas to keep you up at night!
    :-)
