    Tangential (diamond) Tool Holder

    After seeing Celsoari's effort I decided to learn about Tangential Tool Holders and to make one. Here's my finished holder.

    It uses a common ¼" lathe cutting tool, flat ground on the end at a 30º angle from the point. The holder itself rakes the point forward 12º and inward 12º and the holder was made so that the cutting tool is rotated 45º from parallel to the ways. After using it some, I'll probably make right and left hand holders too with the cutting tool parallel for more options when turning or facing. Since the tool is very rigid it cuts beautifully in aluminum and steel (I'd never seen 3' long thread like chips before), and resharpening to a pristine new edge takes less than 5 minutes with a bench grinder jig I also made. The Caswell black oxide finish turned out nice and the process is a lot easier than anodizing aluminum for procedural comparison.

    Holding it at all the correct angles for milling was a challenge but this configuration worked well without having to buy anything to get 'er done.

    Interesting setup on the mill. Looks like a fun compound angle setup.
    What is that mill, horizontal and vertical.
    Also, seems you either have no walls on your machine shop or large doors that are opened to see the outdoors.

    It's commonly known as Shade Tree Machine Works hereabouts. I keep my tools wrapped with oil soaked cloth and covered with tarps, and wrap up time at the end of the day is significant but ya make do with what ya got. I generally smell like a truck stop (and feet) from the petroleum products in liberal use.

    It's a Grizzly G0727 Combo Mill. It does a beautiful job planing in horizontal mode and with adjustment not too bad in vertical. I upgraded it to a ¾HP 3 phase motor and a VFD and it does a fine job at all speeds now. My Dodge Ram power feed on it is still working adequately too.

    The biggest challenge with the fixturing was making it all fit in the limited headroom.
