Tap & Die Holder for Lathe.
If you haven't made one of these for your lathe you have been missing a valuable tool.
I made two tap holders to fit smaller and larger size taps.
For the dies I used regular sockets to hold the dies with a spacer in between the socket end and the front of the socket. Warning Sockets are very hard metal use patience when drilling and tapping the set screws to keep the dies in place. you will also need to make an square headed adapter for the socket to shaft conversion.
Mine uses a tapered end to fit into the tail stock of the lathe. I used a mill and lathe to make this tool but I think a lathe is enough if you like to file things. :O)

Sockets for die holders. Very resourceful.

Very interresting, it is true that taping and diyng by hand on the lathe often ends up being off axis.
Here in your solution, how is the head rotating around the tapered tail, is there a shaft inside the cone ?
What is your source for the tap chuck ?

Hi Christophe, Yes there is a shaft inside the tail stock tapered cone. To answer your first question, To get a perfect hole a machinist must, 1.) center the tail stock to the chuck., 2.) drill the Tap and Die tool center hub hole perfectly.
also I pick a little bit larger drill bit than the normal size to drill the final hole for hard metals when threading on the lathe by hand.
I think I got the heads from grizzly machine manufacturing. any way Yes I did buy those on line.
I must admit sometimes I get a wobble hole but not very often mostly when I get in a hurry. :O)
