I had to go to a school and learn to maintain the telewriters we had between the ATCT and the NWS. Ours had a pen with a coil in it that transmitted to the array under the paper. Both ends could send and receive. No mechanical linkage to the send pen, just a wire. The receive portion worked like a plotter. It was made by Talos and they called it Telenote.
