I have heard of this trick before, nice video shows just how well it works!

would like to have seen the LHS hole drilled completely through, OR seen the RHS hole stopped partially to compare the results. I've also heard of this trick, but by not comparing apples with apples, it's failed to show why you would use the trick.

That said, I've nearly moved to the use of cone drills (aka step drills, or pagoda drills) for holes between 5mm and 35mm in thin material these days.

I'd say that "trick" wasn't needed because the material wasn't exactly thin!

I have heard of using an oily rag to do that.
