    not exactly sure how the release trigger is set up but the vertical chain is always rotating in the same direction so it is most probably coupled 6to the drive axle probably with a second chain and sprockets. the rise and fall of the tamper is well timed with the forward movement of the tractor. the movement of that stick or what ever it is is also consistent with the cycling of the tamper, might have something to do with the reset of the trigger mechanism

    You are probably correct but I would want to be able to pound sand without advancing. My post pounder uses an orbit motor turning a rubber drum that lifts the weight by friction but of course it is manually actuated and falls when the lever is released.
