Japan is earthquake country; self-locking construction joints aren't just for show.

A recent TV documentary showed a model of a Chinese Forbidden City pavilion built with similar joints being shaken on a shake table. Even the Chinese engineers in attendance were surprised at the shake magnitude needed to bring it down.

Not really self-locking they used pins and wedges to hold the joint together. Really impressive imagine the time taken to cut those joints using just hand tools.
