I was driving back to Easton PA on night on the roads back behind Bethlehem & saw the coke ovens unloading, that was an unforgettable sight.

A 1000 years from now someone will discover that slag hill and wonder what could have created it.

I drove a pot hauler for USS in Granite City IL. The bottom of the pot contained a mixture of hot loose dust and slag . The upper two thirds of the pot contained the molten lava like slag ,which was the last dregs of the bottom tapped "heat" in the basic oxygen furnace vessel. The bottom of the pot visible is what we called the skull, which kept the pot from overheating. The distance between the back wheels 25 feet out to out. Top speed about 8 mph. 300 horse detroit. The get the skull out , you had to knock the pot. You raise the pot like you were going to empty it, after it broke over where gravity would take over you released the pot so it would free fall to a hard knock block. If you were lucky the skull would break loose. Otherwise you would raise and re-knock till it popped out. I got some stories.
