    Pins or no pins, why didn't either of them just drive through the gates? Sure, the car would have gotten scratched, and a gate might have been broken. But now, there's a whole trainload of other people involved.

    I agree, that would have been the logical thing to do. The barrier got smashed up anyway and the damage would have been a lot cheaper than the bent car. It is amazing how cars seem to have a perchant for stopping on level crossings. All level crossings were removed in South Africa many years ago, and now there are no trains anyway.
