Ah - the old pull the tree the way you want it to fall bit ... then the puller pulls too hard or the tree falls off the pull axis and the strap can't take it any more.

Nylon tow straps can be deadly!!! Actually any operation involving a lot of stress can be dangerous. That poor kid had no idea the danger he was in.
