Being a Roughneck is one of the most dangerous, dirtiest jobs in America, hands down. My brother worked in the "oil patch" for several years after he received his university degree (!) . The work is brutal, with exceptionally long hours, and crews often sleep in the "doghouse" to maximize their sleep time between shifts. It's not at all uncommon to have the chain get wrapped around the Chain-hand's finger, or hand, taking it cleanly off before anyone can warn the Driller manning the rotating machinery, before he draws up the chain. It was shortly after my brother's 3rd close call with death that he decided a "boring" office job utilizing his architecture degree might be safer than "boring" holes in the ground. And for all the money those guys usually make drilling, they blow it well before their next paycheck.

All it takes for a disaster to strike is for one of the synchronized team to drift for a second!

Those guys are not worm hands. While working daylights as a driller on a 6000ft trailer mount rig I helped design and build I had a couple of guys that could be their mirrors
