I want to do something similar but weld a cross tube under the receiver hitch so I can still have the trailer attached and slip on the crane from either side.

I'm sure this is going to eventually wind up being a fabulous crane but so far I've seen what amounts to over a $1000.00 in machine time for a crane that will not be sellable due to cost. Just like I project I am involved in there have been so many revisions and I have had to redesign so many parts to satisfy someone who claims to be a bean counter that I think it will be cost prohibitive to manufacture
Never try to tell me it can't be done

Maybe, I've seen some awfully expensive truck cranes for sale.

However what is fantastic here is that you can demonstrate the value in DIY and having a shop of your own. Even in my extremely simple shop with it lacking tools, I've built things (often out of scrap) that I would never consider paying for. Sometimes it can get stupid too, have have a piece of furnace duct work hanging from an iron bracket that is likely 100 times stronger that needed but it was in the scrap box and I was working late into the evening.
