Two-headed dog experiment - photo

Soviet scientist and organ transplantation pioneer Vladimir Demikhov giving water to one of his two-headed dog experiments. Demikhov conducted 24 experiments in total between 1954 and 1959. The longest-living two-headed dog survived for 29 days.

As bizarre as this appears, Demikhov was actually an early pioneer in transplant surgery. He died poor and unrecognized, and later scientists who built on his work gained fame and international recognition.

The stuff of nightmares. Freakish.

This just absolutely captures the word "freaky" in one picture. I can't even begin to imagine how this was made to work, even for a day, let alone 29 days.
