USS John F. Kennedy aircraft carrier construction - photos

A friend was aboard a new A/C Carrier during the Viet Nam era (don't remember which one) and after their first cruise they studied the ship's layout and came to the realization that there was a large area of the ship completely walled off with no access. They got out the cutting torch (with all appropriate permissions in place) and cut into the closed off compartment and discovered a large, fully equipped machine shop.

The claim was for the Kitty Hawk class supercarrier. No photos were taken to verify the claim. A machine shop is a crucial part of an aircraft carrier, and can not be hidden and sealed off without access doors. Were was the aircraft carrier chief engineer? And the Naval Shipyard engineers to that matter?
