Ralph - There are many times where during turning you want a positive stop with the carriage - for example, coming up to a shoulder. There is a video and I put a link to it in the original post - http://www.oldmansshop.com/vid-pages/emma-comp-stop.php - this was a compact version of the original construction work. No picture of actual use but perhaps you can imagine how it acts when set up. In fact I think at the end of my video there is a bit where the carriage is brought up to it to test - then just visualize a repeated cut being done up to that point.
