I think you need forked guides to direct brush into the blades as evidenced with the sample stick that wasn't cut but was pushed downward.

Very interesting project. I wonder if a chain saw and bar might be less complex and perhaps more effective. There have to be a structures spaced along the bar to prevent the branches from just being pushed aside. As built, the trail saw could benefit from that as well.
