    Is it a broken hammer drill? Are they using it with the chuck loosened so it doesn't spin the drill bit?

    Nova, probably has it set in "hammer only mode" - mine has that for when you put a chisel bit in, and you don't want the bit to spinn, but jolt. It basically acts like a small jackhammer in that mode.

    That's neat. I've never seen a drill with that setting before. All of my hammer drills have two settings. Spin the chuck with no hammer and spin the chuck with hammer.

    That control exists on my drill (top control), but then there is another control (side lever) which turns the rotation on or off. Below is a snippet from the instruction manual showing how the 2 control levers work to give the various modes of operation.
