With a thermal camera you can have a whole new perspective of the world around you. In the picture below you can literally see hot chips flying off the workpiece on my (not yet finished) DIY mini lathe. This is the main way heat leave the workpiece, and it is clearly visible from those bright sparks.
I have visualized heat of the spindle from ball bearing friction, the belt and motors. And of course I also investigated further, ending up to discover a serious potential fault in the photovoltaic breaker (that if not detected could lead to a fire!) in my house.
