A fascinating story I knew nothing about: https://thevintagent.com/2018/04/04/...als-drag-waye/

"Waye, an electronics boffin, equipped his dragster with recording equipment, so data could be analyzed from each test run; an unheard-of practice at the time. One instrument recorded the distance covered every tenth of a second, while a second instrument recorded the acceleration in G-forces, utilizing a weighted pencil pushing against a spring that plotted a graph on a scrolling piece of paper"

The Drag Waye got considerable publicity at the time because it was so different and was a low budget attempt at a more scientific approach. It did achieve some success but was handicapped by the use of a VW beetle engine. Very few people could ride it because of the unfamiliar layout.
