Vintage percussion press - photo

what's the difference between percussive and fly press? (other than missing the top flyweights)
where would you prefer one over the other?

I wonder why this is sitting in the front room.
"Mommy! Look what followed me home! Can I keep it?"

amazon delivered it while the husband was out of town.

For the same reason some joker tried to scoop my purchase of a Barrett-Cravens skid jack. Turns out, wanted it displayed in entryway of his restaurant for ogling by millennials and steampunk aficionados. Greasy, grimy, about 100 years old, completely mechanical; it's designer turning in his grave to comments of 'it's sooo cool'.

OK - appropriate googling (and an really annoying youtube video) I now see that the this is the big half of a friction screw press - so in my understanding the piece missing from the top is the motor drive which moves the disk to make the ram move up and down. So the difference between it and a fly press is simply the drive to the screw.
