If you were on channel 3 and wanted channel 2 you had to go through all the channels as the tv tuner was also mechanical...

When I was a kid, my grandfather had a remote TV like that but his remote looked different and was smaller, but it worked the same way. I don't remember the TV brand. He had only one leg, so he needed it.

Long ago i made a remote for my tv. It was a long stick with a bent piece of coat hanger on the end that attached to the knob on the tv. I could sit in my chair and change channels like a king...

You could have patented that and made it to easy street.

My parents had two remotes, my sister and me. I also remember the next version of that which was electronic. You could actually hear the different frequencies that were being emitted (back when I had young ears). It had 4 or 5 buttons if I remember correctly.

My grandparents had a Zenith with the space command remote. No batteries. It was known as "the clicker"

These old style remotes were often ultrasonic. You could change the channels by jiggling your keys. If you took the remote apart, there were various tuning forks present that were struck by the remote keys when pushed.
