If their intentions are purely to create content for entertainment it is one thing. and should be treated as such. it their intentions are to use technologies to become modern day purveyors of snake oil for the pulpous of luring investors then it is a bad thing.

I am reminder of a juvie novel by Robert Heinlein the man who sold the moon. in order to colonize the moon and prevent certain countries to lay claim to ownership. He did eventually make it to the moon

Then there is Jules Vern, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas. Just a different media.

But I totally agree it is difficult to separate fantasy from reality.
