Serious hazard for certain and they are downright nuisances.
I've had a breather hose for my CAR (about 2mm dia) blocked by little blighters when unhooked overnight.
For my AIR TOOLS (as in my tip published by The Woodworker and Woodturner (UK)) I have used all manner of deterrents/preventatives for dust and wasps. Once the storage plastic boxes deteriate, the nuisances find their way into air tools. 40 years ago I used lead head nails: now I use a combo of wine corks with holes drilled in to cover the connector for seldom used tools (as the cork breaks/crumbles with regular usage as they need to be a tight fit) and for regularly used air tools, I use the cheap grinding wheels as used in drills.
They are good insects for killing pests in your garden/orchard.
cheers
