At first glance I thought I read Wedding Fails. The only wedding fail is "I do." Anyway, if you are going to weld a skeg on an outdrive, remove it from the boat and drain the oil...
I was on a job once and the guy installing a hand made metal hand rail was welding without a helmet (he did have one with him). I said "Don't you have a helmet?"
He said "yea but I'm use to it"!
"I'm used to it" is a bad excuse to go blind ... The arc emits visible and invisible light radiation, in practically all wavelengths! So, just use a suitable mask, to get a minimum protection, and no lame excuses...
I got flash burn once. Once...
Eyes burned by welding look like a cart full of sand...

Unfortunately this is not the profile of a good professional! All coating and finishing must be protected from welding spatter...
just me, or does the person pulling the Tig welder helmet off in #8 seem like the "fail" should be horseplay in the work place?
Whilst the welder didn't have screens up, he was using his hand for a wind block, and was wearing correct PPE - signage should have been enough for observers to be protected - but some numbnut lifting my helmet whilst I'm welding would be considered as horseplay or worse.
#1 no farting!!!
Admittedly Have set fire to the cuff of my work pants. Saw this reflection inside my viser. From an early age my father taught me to wear welding gloves . "Its not to protect your hands son, its to put out the fire when u set yourself alight".
One of my favorites. "Not just a plain thin newspaper!" 0:41 video:

Its not just a mask, u can read todays news as well -- brilliant! These Chinese think of everything :)
desbromilow, #8 I believe someone pulled the mask off to remind the welder how unpleasant it is to look at the arc. Maybe the welder thinks he's working alone in that place...
Jon, there are versions for all styles: #1 newspaper, #2 futuristic, #3 cereal box, #4 fashion, #5 bottle, #6 cardboard box (better than newspaper), #7 protective bucket and #8 remember: safety first!

Glad that no fatalities were shown
I agree! I hope it stays that way, just elegant comments!
With the exception of the guy grinding towards the torch bottles most of the rest are examples of making do with what you have available in an attempt to protect their eyes. Many races of people around the planet are not nearly as susceptible to the UV radiation of a welding arc as most are in other countries. I've known guys from India who could weld all day long out in the bright sunlight wearing only dark sunglasses and then thread a needle afterwards to sew up their torn shirts. A lot of that is a learned ability to position the rod so it is between you and the arc hiding the most intense part of the arc and using smaller lower amperage rods such as a 2mm 6013 rod
Unfortunately there are people who work in terrible conditions, not by choice, but for survival. If they could choose to work in better conditions, they certainly would. This is a fact to think about ...
