    I might be wrong, but I think he made it with a large magnetic base.

    A mag base is a different critter to just a base that's magnetic. A mag base is super strong and has a selector switch on it.

    Yup they're pretty cool. It's a magnet that you can turn on and off, but it doesn't require electricity. They use them as steady fixtures for dial indicators in machining a lot.
