What is this???
I am a brand new member of HomemadeTools.Net! Happy to be here. As such, I need YOUR help.
Dad recently passed. As an avid tool collector he had a basement full of interesting tools of past and present. Mounted on his wall was this little item. It is surely not very impressive in that it's sole purpose appears to be a reminder of a 2 digit code. It is basically like writing 2 digits on a
scrap of paper and pinning it on the wall. The black centers have a pointer which can be set and changed as desired. I'm completely at a loss to figure out what it is. Any help is appreciated!

Interesting M4 but unlikely. The device in question is quite small making it difficult to see especially in a mood lit "gameroom". I know they had a pool table down there before Dads tools went viral but it was at the other end of the basement. There is no coloring to make the values more visable (black would be ideal).
Its certainly the best guess so far. My thoughts are it may be phone company provided although it goes to 9, not 12 so its not date related. Thanks for the submission! Gotta get back to the 4th axis! TD

It must have belonged to a very old toy or something. Made of plastic, it is certainly not designed to last long! Whoever plays foosball is used to this type of marker! Maybe it's a piece of a toy that your father had when he was a child! Certainly I would keep it with me or put it in my workshop to always remember it ...

My guess is that it is a bit of salvage that he was using to count some workshop event he was interested in tracking. Examples might include:
number of times a special tool was used
number of times a certain operation was performed
number of hours he spent on a certain job
Like the jigs of unknown purpose one unearths in one's own shop from time to time, our heirs will find lots of bits that defy description. (I've even maliciously planted a few to really confound them.)

My Goodness. I'm getting responses from the 4-Star Generals of HT! Ok, sure. He might have used it for anything BUT what was the original use of this counter? It was not a production shop, so thats out. It was literally just a basement. He was a collector of the highest degree, meaning if the price was right, he would buy it. Maybe two. As he didnt do production of any kind, your guesses are valid and interesting but alas, probably not accurate. I can't see him putiing it on the wall. My gut is telling me it's got something to do with a utility. (Electric, Propane, Phone). I can imagine a service provider or installer putting these at all of the customer's home for a quick 2 digit number for the next guy. I just don't know. I REALLY appreaciate your reply. Nice job confounding the heirs! Haha. Come to think of it, my kids will probably be quite perplexed. For a while, I'd hang up the butt of each Christmas tree after making the bottom cut. Why? Damned if I know!

Used for marking when doing sand casting...

Wouldn't the numbers be reversed(for imprinting)?
-
No because they are mounted on the pattern.

Is this officially what this thing was designed for? IE. Have you actually seen this before? So Its for the date of Mfr?
