My take on this guys is that he forgot to pull the valve core on the valve stem and tried to unseat the bead of the tire without deflating the tire first. Weak rim? Yes but looking closely at the machine and tire at the moment of separation looks like the tire forced the rim apart. Compressed by the bead breaker arm/tool.
