This is a model of one of Theo Jansen's Strandbeest, this one is his Rigide Ancora — 1995. He has gotten lots of interest from everyone including artists, mathematicians and NASA. He has a website, www.strandbeest.com
It's very interesting and shows the evolution of his various types. He has done a TED talk where he shows his mechanical - digital logic allowing his beasts to avoid deep water.
