Does it cut the ends square? I feel like it doesn't.

It appears that the second op trims a sliver off the ends…at least a small sliver drops next to the tire.

You are 100% correct. If they changed up the kinematics of that wire cutter they could have a square cut. They could eliminate a whole step and all of that waste. That's going to bother me.

LOL, don't let it bother you too much as long as the clay has not been fired it is like cookie dough just wad it up and reroll it. Slicing off the sliver only insure that every brick is uniform that rotating guillotine wire is cutting reasonably true though.

Yeah it's probably not a big deal. A bit of material drop probably isn't the end of the world. I don't do anything with firing pottery (which I'm guessing is similar?), but my girlfriend does so I have a bit of second hand experience. Reusing clay needs a bit of attention. You have to really mechanically work it to get all the air bubbles out. Sometimes they use a special "pug" mill to work the air out, or sometimes a vacuum pump. If there are any voids full of air or water it'll destroy the part during firing.
