Hi knoba, wonderful site you have! Any reason you used softwood for the table top? Or because it was what was available?

I used softwood because it was; cheaper, easier to source, work & fabricate, it also has a better shock loading (deadening) capability than a hardwood version.

I do have a superb Sjoberg hardwood bench that I use for joinery, but I didn't make it...

I'm surprised, knoba, that you bought a workbench! After going through your site, I was simply amazed at the breadth and variety of your projects.

Thanks DIYer! Nice compliment. That's absolutely made my day!

Without a shadow of a doubt, time is my most valued asset. The wood on that workbench (3" Beech) would have taken me 3 years to season, by air drying, (that's if it doesn't; split, warp, crook or bow).

I only make tools; when I can make them cheaper, or better, than retail products, that, or if they don't exist at all, or if I can learn something from the process.

I'm not precious about what I've made, in fact the end product is always a bit of low for me. What I love, is getting there, the journey, that rocks!

Do you have a site/blog, or thoughts about doing one?

Time, yes, seems to compress as one grows old. My skill set is limited to fixing things, and modifying tools to suit the task at hand. I've thought of maintaining a site, but after starting a couple, I find that it's almost like work - and I'd rather go places on a road trip, or my bicycle, or check out a new eatery with my wife.
