A workshop stand/helping hand

For a long time I needed a workshop stand to help me with holding long materials in the vise or when I need to drill holes in it. For my next project, an hydraulic press, it is very much needed, so finally I made one. I decided to make different heads for it, a roller head for general work, a V head for round stock and tubes and a longer flat head for plate material. Perhaps I will make a holder for my camera too because I still don't have a tripod, it would be a very stable base for recording my films.

I'm not sure about availability in Russia but tripod ball heads, e.g.,

are available cheaply. Why not mount one to your workshop stand and use it as a camera tripod?

Here in Russia its not so easy to find what you need, specially for me its not easy as I am a Belgian (married to a Russian) and don't know the exact terminology, my wife is not technical so she can't help me. Anyway most Russians don't have the money to buy something descent so they make things themselves out of scrap, most of the time its horrible but there are some geniuses who makes wonderful tools out of nothing.

A ball joint is the most adjustable but, given that your stand already has three degrees of translational freedom and rotational freedom around the vertical, you only really need an up-down nod/tilt motion to be able to point the camera anywhere.

A simple block of wood drilled to rotate about a horizontal shaft and fitted with a lockscrew to hold it in place would provide that. Most still cameras have a 1/4-20 female screw joint to attach to a tripod so a bolt that size in the block would hold the camera.

I bought a small tripod, for about 5$, which I will adapt for my work stand. For the moment I stick the 3 legs together in the upper tube and it seems to be working fine :D
