Each recess is made as deep as it is wide which permits the tool to be used as a depth gauge as well. Drilling and tapping a few common thread holes into the body would add to its utility as a thread gauge (but I already have several previously made).
They look like nice gauges, but, I don't see how they get into tight spaces and recesses.
I use a small 75mm/ 3" caliper first then get the spanner.
